There are several different types of parasites our dogs and cats can have. Some of them can be contracted by humans! All puppies and kittens have some sort of intestinal parasite they are born with and we will provide some sort of dewormer at each vaccine visits. Adult dogs and cats can pick up parasites in their environment, from fleas, ticks, wildlife in your yard, etc. Keeping your pet on a prevention is much more effective and less costly then treating for a disease/parasite!

Heart worm

The American Heartworm Society recommends guidelines that include year-round prevention for dogs and cats. Yes, CATS! Cats get heartworm disease like dogs, via mosquitoes. The interesting fact is that of cats that tested heartworm positive, the majority were indoor only cats! Symptoms in cats often mimic asthma or allergic bronchitis. And while there is no cure, testing and prevention are recommended so that owners are prepared with treatment if acute respiratory distress symptoms are noted.
Fortunately there is a treatment for canine heartworm disease, but this disease is so much easier, and cheaper, to prevent.

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are certainly something you need to worry about for your 4 legged friend. Even if they are only outside for a small amount of time/ completely indoor! Bugs can still come into your house and infest your pet! Better to prevent an infestation rather then chase a problem later. We currently recommend April-November with flea and tick prevention, however with the milder winters we have been leaning toward year round prevention. It is recommend you stay on year round prevention if your pet goes boarding a lot or goes to doggy daycare or any other area with a high dog population.

Fecal Parasite Screen

The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends yearly screening for intestinal parasites in canines and bi annual screenings in felines. Parasites can burrow into the muscle when your pets are young puppies and kitten, emerging several years later. So even if your pet is on a monthly prevention, it is a good idea to continue to screen as recommended. Especially if your pets spends time around a young child, it is important to ensure that your pet does not have intestinal parasites that can be passed to those with an immature immune system.
